The literature scatters across several terms depending on what aspect you're pointing at: **binge-watching** for the marathon behavior, **media escapism** for the motive, **narrative transportation** for the absorbed state, and Kubey & Csikszentmihalyi's deliberately provocative framing, "television addiction is no mere metaphor," for the compulsive edge of it.

**What's actually firing**

Three systems, roughly:

The **orienting response** — Pavlov's old finding that novelty in the visual field involuntarily grabs attention. Every cut, zoom, pan, and sudden sound triggers it. Film grammar is essentially a machine for pulling this reflex a few times per second. You aren't choosing to keep watching; part of your brainstem keeps voting yes before your cortex is consulted.

The **mentalizing network** (medial prefrontal cortex, temporoparietal junction) plus embodied simulation. Watching that woman's face in your photo, your brain runs a partial copy of her distress — same regions that would activate if a real person in front of you were drowning. Uri Hasson's work showed that a well-directed film produces near-identical activity patterns across different viewers' brains. Strong storytelling is literally neural synchronization; the director is temporarily driving your cortex.

The **mesolimbic dopamine loop**, but not in the crude "dopamine hit" sense people throw around. What episodic narrative exploits is *prediction*. Dopamine tracks anticipation and resolution of uncertainty. A cliffhanger is an unresolved prediction error left deliberately open, and your system is built to want closure. Autoplay removes the one moment where deliberate choice could intervene.

**Why people do it**

The honest answer is mood regulation and cognitive offloading. TV occupies just enough attention to crowd out rumination — it partially suppresses the default mode network, the self-referential chatter that generates anxiety and replays your day. It's the cheapest available relief from being alone with your own mind, and it requires no skill, no other person's cooperation, and no decisions.

There's also the **social surrogacy hypothesis** (Derrick's research): familiar characters activate belonging circuitry enough to blunt loneliness. Not a substitute for real connection, but not nothing either — parasocial bonds are measurably real to the brain.

**The paradox worth sitting with**

Csikszentmihalyi's experience-sampling studies found something uncomfortable: people report mild relaxation *during* TV, and slightly worse mood, lower energy, and more passivity *after* — the opposite of activities requiring effort, which feel hard during and rewarding after. So the reinforcement is front-loaded and shallow. It's the one activity people reliably do more of than they endorse doing. Low activation energy, low barrier to entry, immediate soothing, no residue of accomplishment.

Which makes it less a pleasure than an anesthetic — and that's roughly the design intent of the industry that produces it.
