🌐 WordPress for the Chronically Online: Build a Website in 1 Hour

**The "I Have No Attention Span" Guide to Owning Your Corner of the Internet** ⚡

By the end of this, you'll have a REAL website that exists on the ACTUAL internet. Not a Google Doc. Not a Notion page you forgot about. A whole website.

**Real talk:** You'll spend more time overthinking what to caption your Instagram story than building this website. Let's get into it. 💀

---

🎯 What You're About to Unlock

In literally 60 minutes (less time than that YouTube video essay you have in your Watch Later), you'll have:

**No coding required.** If you can send a text message, you're overqualified. If you've ever edited your Spotify playlist, you're basically a software engineer now.

**POV:** You're about to have more internet presence than half the businesses in your town. 😌

---

🚀 Level 1: The Tutorial Zone (10 minutes)

🤔 Wait, What Even IS WordPress?

Okay so imagine if LEGO, Canva, and Twitter had a baby that actually let you own your content. That's WordPress.

**The breakdown:**
- 🧱 **Blocks** = drag and drop stuff (it's giving Canva but make it websites)
- 🎨 **Themes** = skins for your site (like changing your phone wallpaper but your whole personality)
- 🔌 **Plugins** = mods (for the gamers) or apps (for everyone else)
- 📱 **Works everywhere** = phone, tablet, that ancient laptop you refuse to replace

**Fun Fact:** WordPress runs 40% of the ENTIRE internet. Including:
- 🎬 Disney's blogs
- 🚀 NASA (actual rocket scientists said "yeah WordPress is fine")
- 📰 The New York Times blogs
- 🎵 Rolling Stones official site
- 🎮 Xbox blogs

**Translation:** If WordPress is good enough for NASA, it's definitely good enough for your "rating every coffee shop within walking distance" blog or your freelance portfolio that you keep procrastinating on. 🚀☕

🎮 WordPress.com vs WordPress.org (Choose Your Fighter)

**WordPress.com** = Easy Mode 🟢
- Sign up in 30 seconds (faster than your morning doom scroll)
- FREE free (not "free trial that charges you when you forget" free)
- Zero tech skills required
- Perfect for: literally everyone starting out
- **THIS IS WHAT WE'RE USING**

**WordPress.org** = Hard Mode 🔴
- Need to buy hosting (there goes your coffee budget)
- More control, more problems
- For when you're monetizing or going full time
- Or when you want to impress the tech bro in your DMs

**Today's mission:** WordPress.com because:
1. It's actually free (no surprise charges, no "we need your credit card for verification")
2. It's fast (faster than you can say "wait I need to touch grass")
3. No parental financial involvement required 💅

**Analogy:** WordPress.com vs WordPress.org is like streaming vs vinyl. Both play music. One is just... a lot more effort. We're choosing streaming. Sorry not sorry to the purists.

✅ Mission 1: Make an Account (5 minutes)

**Step 1:** Go to WordPress.com

**Step 2:** Click "Start your website"
*(It's massive. Like, annoyingly big. You literally can't miss it.)*

**Step 3:** Pick a website name

**Name Ideas That Don't Make Me Cringe:**
- ✅ **Good:** youractualname, creativealias, yourbrand, something memorable
- ✅ **Also Good:** portfolioby[name], [name]creates, [name]writes
- ❌ **Not Good:** website123, test1234, idk, untitled
- ⚠️ **Questionable:** anything you wouldn't want a future employer to see (your grandma WILL find this)

**Pro Tip:** This becomes yourusername.wordpress.com — it's basically your URL. Choose wisely. No pressure. (Okay some pressure.)

**Step 4:** Find the FREE plan

WordPress will try VERY hard to get you to pay. Scroll down. Keep scrolling. There's a free option hiding at the bottom like it's embarrassed. Click it. You're smarter than their marketing team.

**Step 5:** Create a password you'll remember

Please not:
- password123 (the bar is on the floor)
- qwerty (the bar is underground)
- your pet's name + birthday (it's on your Instagram highlights, bestie)

**Step 6:** You're in. 🎊

**Achievement Unlocked:** 🏆 **Internet Landlord** (congrats, you own digital property before owning physical property, as is tradition for our generation)

🎨 Mission 2: Pick a Theme (5 minutes)

A theme is basically an outfit for your website. Except your website won't have a breakdown about having "nothing to wear."

**How to do this:**
1. Click "Appearance" in the left menu
2. Click "Themes"
3. Scroll through until something catches your eye
4. Click "Activate"
5. That's literally it

**Theme Recommendations Based on Your Vibe:**

**🌟 Seedlet** — The "I Have My Life Together" Vibe
- Clean, minimal, organized
- Perfect for: portfolios, professional stuff, tricking people into thinking you're functional
- Energy: "I use a planner and actually check it"

**🎨 Livro** — The "Mysterious Writer" Vibe
- Great for blogs, writing, deep thoughts
- Perfect for: future authors, people who journal, anyone who wants their random 3am thoughts to look profound
- Energy: "I've read Sylvia Plath"

**🎮 Disco** — The "I Don't Take Life Too Seriously" Vibe
- Fun, playful, colorful
- Perfect for: creative projects, meme pages, anyone who peaked in 2019
- Energy: "Life is short, be chaotic"

**📸 Flavor** — The "Visual Portfolio" Vibe
- Image-focused, sleek
- Perfect for: photographers, artists, anyone whose Instagram grid is curated
- Energy: "I shoot in RAW"

**💡 Pro Decision-Making:** Close your eyes, scroll, open eyes, click. You can change it in 30 seconds if you hate it. This isn't a tattoo.

**Hot Take:** The theme matters less than you think. Content > aesthetics. A good theme with nothing on it is just a pretty empty room.

---

🏗️ Level 2: Build Your Pages (15 minutes)

📄 Pages Explained (For People Who Skipped the Tutorial)

Pages = different sections of your website house:
- 🏠 **Home** = front door (first impressions matter, unfortunately)
- 👋 **About** = the "who are you and why should I care" page
- 🎨 **Portfolio/Gallery** = the flex zone
- 📧 **Contact** = how people reach you (if you want them to)

**Gaming Analogy:** Pages are like different areas in an open world game. Except nothing will try to kill you here. Probably.

🎯 Mission 3: Home Page (5 minutes)

**Step 1:** Click "Pages" → "Add New Page"

**Step 2:** Write something that makes people want to stay

**Option A — The Confident Approach:**
```
Welcome to [Your Name]'s Internet Corner.
You found the right place. Stick around.
```

**Option B — The Relatable Approach:**
```
Hi. I'm [Name]. I made a website.
I don't know what I'm doing but I'm doing it anyway.
(Isn't that just life though?)
```

**Option C — The Mysterious Approach:**
```
You've stumbled onto something.
Not sure what yet. Let's find out together.
```

**Step 3:** Add a description using this fill-in-the-blank (edit as needed):

```
Hey, I'm [name].
I [what you do/create/care about]. Sometimes I [other thing].
Currently [what you're working on/into right now].
Here you'll find:
→ [Thing 1 — like "my portfolio"]
→ [Thing 2 — like "occasional unhinged blog posts"]
→ [Thing 3 — like "proof that I exist on the internet"]
Feel free to look around. Or don't. I'm not your mom.
```

**Step 4:** Add an image

Click the **+** button → Image

Ideas:
- A photo of yourself (normal OR unhinged, your call)
- Your pet (instant engagement)
- Your work/art
- Literally anything that represents your vibe
- A pizza (when in doubt)

**Step 5:** Click "Publish"

**You just made a home page that exists on the real internet.** Go touch grass to celebrate. Then come back.

**Achievement Unlocked:** 🏆 **First Page Builder**

👋 Mission 4: About Page (5 minutes)

The "About" page is where people decide if they vibe with you. No pressure. (All pressure.)

**The Template (Customize Aggressively):**

```
# About Me
Hey. I'm [Name]. [One sentence about what you do.]
The Quick Version
📍 Based in [Location]
💼 Currently: [Job/Student/Freelancer/Professional Overthinker]
🎯 Focused on: [Your thing — art, writing, tech, chaos]
☕ Fueled by: [Coffee/Tea/Spite/Pure Anxiety]
The Slightly Longer Version
[2-3 sentences about your background. Keep it real. Nobody wants to read a corporate bio.]
I started [thing] because [honest reason — could be "I needed a creative outlet" or "I wanted to stop being a consumer and start creating" or "unemployment hit different"].
When I'm not [main thing], I'm probably [other thing] or [relatable thing like "doom scrolling" or "convincing myself to go outside"].
What You'll Find Here
→ [What content you're making — portfolio pieces, blog posts, etc.]
→ [Why it matters or who it's for]
→ [Maybe a disclaimer like "quality varies based on my mental state"]
Let's Connect
[Links to socials or just say "DMs are open" or "email me if you want"]
---
*Thanks for reading my about page instead of my actual content. Appreciate you.* ✌️
```

**Pro Tips:**
- Write like you talk. Corporate speak is dead.
- Humor helps. Self-deprecation is our generation's love language.
- Include at least one thing that makes you human (hobbies, interests, hot takes)
- Proofread. Or don't. Typos are authentic now.

**Achievement Unlocked:** 🏆 **Personal Brand Established** (congrats, you're now a "content creator" technically)

🎨 Mission 5: Portfolio/Gallery Page (5 minutes)

Time to show off. You've earned it. Or you will earn it. Fake it til you make it.

**Step 1:** Create a new page. Name it:
- "My Work" (professional)
- "Portfolio" (also professional)
- "Gallery" (artsy)
- "Stuff I Made" (casual)
- "Look At My Things" (unhinged but valid)

**Step 2:** Click **+** → search "Gallery"

**Step 3:** Upload 5-10 images of your best work

**What to include based on who you are:**

🎨 **Creative Types:**
- Your best work (not ALL your work, BEST work)
- Process shots if you have them
- Before/after if applicable
- That one thing you're proud of that flopped online

💻 **Tech/Dev Types:**
- Screenshots of projects
- Code snippets (if they look cool)
- UI designs
- That side project you actually finished

📸 **Photography/Visual Types:**
- Your strongest images
- Variety of subjects/styles
- Maybe your most "viral" shot
- Behind-the-scenes

🎮 **Gaming/Streaming Types:**
- Stream highlights
- Setup photos
- Channel art
- Your best clips

📝 **Writers:**
- Cover images of your work
- Quote graphics
- Publication screenshots
- Aesthetic writing setup shots

**Step 4:** Add captions (optional but recommended)

Good captions:
- ✅ "Client project for [Brand] — they wanted [thing]"
- ✅ "Personal piece exploring [theme]"
- ✅ "This took 47 hours and three mental breakdowns"

Bad captions:
- ❌ "image1.jpg"
- ❌ "untitled"
- ❌ nothing (c'mon)

**Step 5:** Publish

**Achievement Unlocked:** 🏆 **Portfolio Owner** (you now have somewhere to point when people ask "what do you do")

---

✍️ Level 3: Your First Blog Post (10 minutes)

📝 Blog Posts Explained

A blog post is like a tweet but you actually own it and it won't disappear when the platform inevitably implodes.

**Why blog when [social platform] exists?**
- You OWN this content
- No algorithm deciding who sees it
- It lives forever (or until you delete it)
- It's searchable
- It looks professional
- Main character energy

🎯 Mission 6: Write Something (10 minutes)

**Step 1:** Click "Posts" → "Add New Post"

**Step 2:** Write a title that makes people click

**Title Formulas That Work:**

🎯 **The List:**
- "5 Things I Learned From [Experience]"
- "My Top 10 [Things] Ranked"
- "Every [Thing] I Tried This Month, Rated"

💭 **The Hot Take:**
- "Why [Popular Thing] is Actually [Opinion]"
- "[Unpopular Opinion] and I Will Die on This Hill"
- "We Need to Talk About [Thing]"

📖 **The Story:**
- "I Tried [Thing] For a Week. Here's What Happened."
- "How I [Achieved Thing] (And Almost Didn't)"
- "The Time I [Embarrassing Story]"

🤔 **The Thoughts:**
- "Things That Make Zero Sense to Me"
- "Notes on [Topic] Nobody Asked For"
- "A Love Letter to [Thing You Like]"

**Step 3:** Write the post using this structure:

```
[Hook — first sentence that makes people want to keep reading]
Something like: "So I spent the last month [doing thing] and I have thoughts."
[Context — why are you writing this]
"I've been thinking about [topic] because [reason]."
[Main Content — 3-5 paragraphs]
Paragraph 1: First point
Keep it conversational. Write like you're explaining to a friend.
Paragraph 2: Second point
Add a personal story or example if you have one.
Paragraph 3: Third point
This is where you can get slightly unhinged if that's your vibe.
[Optional List]
If you have multiple things to say:
→ Thing one (with explanation)
→ Thing two (with context)
→ Thing three (with hot take)
[Conclusion]
Wrap it up. What's the takeaway? What do you want people to think about?
[Call to Action]
"What do you think? Drop a comment." or "Agree? Disagree? Let me know."
```

**Step 4:** Add images between paragraphs
- Breaks up text walls
- Makes it look professional
- Memes are acceptable (context dependent)
- Screenshots work
- Even stock photos (but make them interesting)

**Step 5:** Add a category
- Click "Categories" on the right
- Create ones like: Thoughts, Reviews, Personal, Creative, Tech, etc.
- This helps organize your posts later

**Step 6:** Hit Publish

**Achievement Unlocked:** 🏆 **Blogger** (you can put "content creator" in your bio now, it's legally allowed)

💡 Writer's Block? Try These:

1. "Honest Review: [Something You Recently Used/Watched/Tried]"
2. "Things I Changed My Mind About This Year"
3. "A Beginner's Guide to [Thing You Know About]"
4. "What [Hobby/Interest] Taught Me About Life"
5. "My Current Obsessions, Explained"
6. "Defending [Thing That Gets Hate]"
7. "Rating [Category of Things] From Best to Worst"
8. "Lessons From My [Age] Failed Attempts at [Thing]"
9. "A Day In My Life (Honest Version)"
10. "Dear Future Me" (time capsule post)

**The #1 Rule:** Write like you're texting your best friend about something interesting. If you wouldn't say it out loud, don't write it.

---

🎨 Level 4: Make It Not Ugly (15 minutes)

🌈 Mission 7: Colors That Don't Hurt (5 minutes)

**Go to:** Appearance → Customize → Colors

**Color Palettes That Work:**

💙🖤 **Dark Mode Energy**
- Navy/black background, white/light text
- Vibe: "I use dark mode on everything"
- Perfect for: tech, gaming, night owls

🤍🖤 **Minimal Clean**
- White background, black text, one accent color
- Vibe: "I watch design YouTube"
- Perfect for: portfolios, professional, anyone trying to look put together

🔵⚪ **Classic Professional**
- Blue and white
- Vibe: "I can be trusted"
- Perfect for: literally anything business-adjacent

🧡🖤 **Bold Statement**
- Orange/coral + black
- Vibe: "I have opinions and I'm not quiet about them"
- Perfect for: creative work, blogs, standing out

💜🖤 **Artsy Mysterious**
- Purple/deep violet + dark backgrounds
- Vibe: "I have an aesthetic and it's not negotiable"
- Perfect for: artists, writers, anyone with main character energy

**Rules:**
- MAX 3 colors (more = chaos)
- Make sure you can READ the text (contrast matters)
- Test it on your phone
- If it hurts your eyes, it hurts everyone's eyes

**The Test:** Would you actually spend time on a site that looks like this? No? Change it.

🧭 Mission 8: Navigation Menu (5 minutes)

**Go to:** Appearance → Menus

**Step 1:** Create a new menu (call it "Main Menu" or whatever)

**Step 2:** Add your pages in this order:
1. Home (always first)
2. About
3. Portfolio/Work/Gallery
4. Blog
5. Contact (always last)

**Why this order?** It's the natural flow. "Hello → Who are you → What do you do → What do you think → How do I reach you"

**Step 3:** Save

**Achievement Unlocked:** 🏆 **Navigation Designer** (your site is now easier to use than most small business websites)

✨ Mission 9: Widgets (5 minutes)

**Go to:** Appearance → Widgets

Widgets are sidebar add-ons. Pick 3-5 max.

**The Essential Ones:**

🔍 **Search** — helps people find stuff
📝 **Recent Posts** — shows your latest content
🏷️ **Categories** — organizes your posts
📱 **Social Icons** — links your other platforms

**Optional but cool:**

📅 **Calendar** — if you post regularly
📊 **Popular Posts** — if you have traffic
📧 **Newsletter Signup** — if you're building an audience

**How to add:** Drag from left to right. Drop. Done.

**Pro Tip:** Less is more. Don't clutter your sidebar like it's 2008 MySpace.

---

🔧 Level 5: Add Features (10 minutes)

🔌 What Are Plugins/Features?

Plugins = apps for your website. They add functionality without code.

**Think of it like:**
- WordPress = your phone
- Theme = how it looks
- Plugins = apps you install
- You = the genius running everything

🎯 Mission 10: Turn On the Essentials (10 minutes)

**✅ Feature 1: Comments** (2 min)

Let people interact with your posts.

**Settings → Discussion**
- ✅ "Allow people to submit comments on new posts"
- ✅ "Comment author must fill out name and email"
- Consider: "Users must be registered and logged in to comment" (less spam)

**Reality check:** Your first comment will probably be spam. Your second comment will be your mom. This is normal.

**✅ Feature 2: Sharing Buttons** (3 min)

Let people share your stuff on social.

**Appearance → Customize → look for Sharing or Social settings**
- Enable sharing buttons
- Pick platforms (Twitter/X, Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, etc.)

They'll show up at the bottom of each post.

**Why it matters:** Makes it easy for people to spread your content. Free marketing.

**✅ Feature 3: Contact Form** (5 min)

Let people reach you without doxxing yourself.

**Create a "Contact" page**
- Click **+**
- Search "Contact Form"
- Add the block
- Customize fields (Name, Email, Message minimum)

**Example Contact Page:**

```
# Let's Talk
Got something to say? Question? Collaboration idea?
Just want to tell me my hot take was wrong?
Fill this out and I'll get back to you.
[Contact Form]
You can also find me:
→ Twitter/X: @handle
→ Instagram: @handle
→ LinkedIn: /in/handle
→ Carrier pigeon: results may vary
---
*Please no spam. I will judge you.*
```

**Achievement Unlocked:** 🏆 **Feature Master**

🚀 Future Plugins (When You Level Up)

When you upgrade or switch to WordPress.org:

**For now:** Free version has everything you need to start. Upgrade when it makes sense.

---

🎉 Level 6: Go Live (5 minutes)

🚀 Mission 11: You're Already Live

**Plot twist:** Every time you clicked "Publish," it went straight to the internet. Your website has been live this WHOLE time.

**Your URL:** yourusername.wordpress.com

**Test it:**
1. Open a new tab (or your phone)
2. Type your website address
3. Press Enter
4. Witness your creation

**Check everything:**
- ✅ Menu works
- ✅ Images load
- ✅ Posts are readable
- ✅ Mobile looks good (check on your phone!)
- ✅ Contact form works (test it yourself)

**If something's broken:** Go back, edit, refresh, repeat.

📱 Mission 12: Share It (2 minutes)

Time to show people what you built.

**The Announcement:**

📱 **Text/DM:**
"just built a website in an hour, go look at it: [link]"

📸 **Instagram Story:**
Screenshot → add text "made a website" → link sticker

🐦 **Twitter/X:**
"built a website. here it is. [link]"

💼 **LinkedIn (if that's your vibe):**
"Excited to share my new portfolio website. [link] #webdev #portfolio"

📧 **Email Signature:**
Add your website URL under your name

**Who to tell:**
- Friends (they'll hype you up)
- Family (legally obligated to be proud)
- Potential clients/employers (this is why we built it)
- Internet strangers (your new audience)

**Achievement Unlocked:** 🏆 **Website Owner**

You now own a piece of the internet. That's more property than most of us will ever have. 🏠

---

📱 Bonus: Mobile Check

**ALWAYS check your site on mobile.** Most people browse on their phones.

1. Open your site on your phone
2. Scroll through everything
3. Click every link
4. Make sure text is readable
5. Make sure nothing looks weird

**Good news:** WordPress auto-optimizes for mobile. But always verify.

---

🎊 You Did It

**What you built today:**
- A real website on the real internet
- Multiple pages (Home, About, Portfolio, Contact)
- A blog post
- A contact form
- A professional online presence

**What this means:**
- You can link it anywhere
- Potential clients/employers can find you
- You control your content
- You own your platform
- Main character behavior achieved

**Next Steps:**
1. Post more content (consistency beats perfection)
2. Share your posts when you write them
3. Add to your portfolio as you create
4. Update your About page as you evolve
5. Maybe upgrade eventually (when you're making money from it)

**Final Boss Tip:** The best website is a published website. Don't wait until it's perfect. Ship it. Improve as you go. Perfectionism is just procrastination in a trench coat.

---

🆘 Troubleshooting

**"My site looks different than yours"**
- Themes vary. That's okay. The structure is what matters.

**"I can't find [feature]"**
- WordPress updates constantly. Search in the left menu or use the search bar.

**"It's not perfect"**
- Neither is anything. Publish anyway. Fix later.

**"Nobody's visiting"**
- Share it. SEO takes time. Keep posting. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither is web traffic.

**"I want to delete everything and start over"**
- Totally valid. Settings → Delete Site. But maybe sleep on it first.

---

📊 Quick Reference

| Task | Where to Find It |
|------|------------------|
| New Page | Pages → Add New |
| New Post | Posts → Add New |
| Change Theme | Appearance → Themes |
| Edit Colors | Appearance → Customize |
| Add Menu | Appearance → Menus |
| Add Widgets | Appearance → Widgets |
| Site Settings | Settings → General |
| View Your Site | Click your site name at top |

---

**Congratulations.** You're now a website owner. That's more than most people accomplish in a day of "productivity."

Go forth and create. Or procrastinate. Either way, at least now you have a website to procrastinate ON.
